“Magento is going to win the open source ecommerce war, hands down”

Magento is going to win the open source ecommerce war, hands down. I’ve never seen another platform so well architected */AND/* well designed as Magento, its simply amazing; they’ve done everything right! Varien’s technical skill as well as their openness and willingness to embrace the community model show me that they are determined to pump out a top notch ecommerce platform with Magento, and they are well on their way to doing that and running away with the prize.

It’s all so very true! Varien rocks! Thanks for making such a great platform, and OS makes it outstanding!

I’d have to agree with that.  There is nothing else like it, and the price is right too. wink

Magento wins blindfolded, spun around 10 times, drugged, and with a gimpy leg. Magento is just that superior.  tongue laugh

No, I don’t agree. Magento doesn’t have everything right. I should not be stressed out by my software’s interface. Creating an order in the backend is jarring and frustrating experience. The repetitive “Now loading” overlays interrupts my concentration, and I can see that it wouldn’t be too graceful in handling user errors. Also, because Magento has gigantic forms, the submit buttons really shouldn’t be on the top. As I fill out a form, I expect the submit button to be on the bottom, because I’m already down there.

So I’m going to ask Mr. Aboutboul, “Have you seen Übercart? (http://www.ubercart.org) It’s built on the open source CMS Drupal (http://drupal.org). I think you’ll find that it is very easy to understand and use, but also very extensible, just like the platform it is built on.”

Also, JavaScript is needed to submit comments? Ew.

Is going to win, that’s important here, I do belief this platform is strong. But, as island usurper stated, it lacks some user friendliness. It’s however the strongest out of the box ecommerce package I have seen. This is also the reason why their is such a big learning curve. All in all it’s has a better potential at the moment then the upcoming osc v3, ubercart, virtuemart on joomla etc… .

Fixing a few “user friendliness” problems will require minor interface changes.  As a whole, there is nothing that even compares to Magento on the open source market.

Yes, Ubercart isn’t bad, but not everyone is interested in running Drupal sites.

While it is early days, I’ll place my bets on Magento coming to the fore with open source e-commerce. After all, isn’t the current leader osCommerce!

    Time will tell
