Magento Community Translations
A new tool was introduced in the community site today (available through the Community tab) in an effort to streamline and organize the community translations for Magento. This is the first phase of a comprehensive process to provide translations to Magento’s default interface. In time, this functionality will be extended to support all available interfaces on Magento Connect.
In the next few days, we’ll be working on additional functionality, including:
- Utlizing the in-line translation tool working on the live interface to suggest a translation or an alternative. The moderator will select the most appropriate suggestion.
- Support for multiple interfaces as available through Magento Connect. The underlying concept is to have as many interfaces as possible translated to multiple languages.
- Tool to quickly find untranslated strings per locale.
At any time, you can download the latest translations at http://www.magentocommerce.com/langs/list/
Please note that a single moderator is assigned per locale. If you’d like to get involved or don’t see your locale listed, please get in touch with us.
The demo store has been updated with the latest version of the translations as we currently have.

How does the downloaded translation work after I put it under app/locale folder?
Will it show on front end if you choose this locale in the process of localization installation?

I noticed that there is a Taiwan locale select item in the localization installation process .
But the translation list above only has Chinese locale not Taiwan locale. Does the Chinese translation files has anything to do with the selection of localization installation? I add the Chinese translation into the app/locale folder, but I also did not see the Chinese select item at the store front end. What is the relation of this translation files with the language selection at front end?

@Adam - adding additional languages for front-end implies creating a separate store view for each of them (System -> Manage Stores). After store view is created, you can go to System -> Configuration and set Locale that should be used for this store view. If you do not need multi languages, you can change the locale for the only store view in System Configuration as well.

I’ve found the id_ID.zip in http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/760/, I hope it’s the latest one.
I just curious why Magento does not use .po/.mo files for language translation?
