Magento 1.1 Is Here!!!

We are thrilled to announce the availability of the production release of Magento 1.1 ( Download |Release Notes ).
For this major release we focused on expanding Magento's product configuration options, streamlining integration between strategic Magento modules and external applications, increasing the flexibility of the core tax module to allow for Canadian and EU tax rules and boosting the overall performance of the Magento Platform.
Here are some of the highlights of Magento 1.1:
More product-types
- Bundles (most commonly used in kitting or in the built-to-order product model)
- Virtual Products - products that don't require shipping information
More ways to configure products
- Custom Product Options - allow merchants to designate a SKU to a base item and add attributes instead of having to create a unique SKU for every combination of options (simple products).
- Personalized Products - a new product configuration feature in Magento 1.1 that allows customers to personalize products by adding text, such as embroideries, engravings, etc.
Integrate with any application via Web Services
Magento 1.1 features a new Webservices API with methods for easy integration between Magento's Catalog, Customer and Sales modules and any third party application.
Speeding up the process(ing)
One of the main goals for Magento 1.1 was to examine bottlenecks in the platform and improve performance. In the production release of Magento 1.1 performance was improved by as much as 40% in the catalog and sales modules, and by optimizing when and how data loads, responsiveness of the Admin UI was also increased significantly.
With over 400,000 downloads to date, Magento is quickly evolving into a household name in the eCommerce market. This release is set to extend the reach of the Magento platform even further. We are confident that the ability to create more product types with more configuration methods combined with the Webservices API and 40% more umphh will push Magento into new markets and audiences, and to even greater heights.
Upgrading an existing Magento Version
It is now possible to upgrade your existing Magento installation to 1.1 through the Magento Connect Manager. To do so:
- Do NOT use your live or production site. We suggest making a copy of your site and upgrading that copy first.
- Log into your Magento Connect Manager.
- Select the 'Setting' tab.
- Change the Preferred State to 'Stable', and save settings.
- For the Mage_All_Latest package select upgrade.
- Click on the 'Commit Changes' button. The upgrade should start.
- After upgrade is complete click on the 'Refresh' button.
- You should now have Magento 1.1 installed.
There are a number of changes that come with any new release of Magento, especially major milestone versions, such as the (current) version 1.1 release. There is a wiki post available detailing how to upgrade your Magento theme to take advantage of the new release.

Just as a tip, the instructions for upgrading to 1.1 are not exactly correct. In the Magento Connect manager, after setting the environment to ‘Stable’, the extension key should be “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest”, not “Mage_All_Latest”.

Just two details :
I reggret that Bundle with dynamic pricing cannot include custom defined options. That kills my plans for my future shop. I whish I could modify code to allow options.
And like ptjedi I can’t see Image in the Custom Options.
Thank you, really.

Dear Magento,
I haven’t upgraded yet but based upon some of the feedback, congratulations are in order. I’m curious about two things:
1: In the upgrade instructions your first itme is “Do NOT install this over a live site”, but as I read on I don’t read how to use 1.1 as the ‘Live’ site. Do you have instructions for that?
2: Relative to the Roadmap, when will Full Back Orders be implemented? They are not mentioned in the Release Notes and they are still a Roadmap item on the roadmap page.
If they’ve been implemented, please disregard. As I said, I have not yet upgraded. Those are my weekend plans! LOL

I see on app/code/core/Mage/Bundle/Model/Product/Price.php this comment :
/* some strange thing
foreach ($options as $option) {
$selectionCount = count($option->getSelections());
if ($selectionCount) {
foreach ($option->getSelections() as $selection) {
if ($selection->isSalable() && ($selection->getIsDefault() || ($option->getRequired() &&)) {
$finalPrice = $finalPrice + $this->getSelectionPrice($product, $selection);
}
}
}
}
*/
It’s about the option price. Is it the reason that bundle product with dynamic pricing cannot include custom defined options?

@greg (1): This just means not to update live sites but first create a development copy, upgrade it, make sure everything works correctly (there were changes in themes, tax configuration and others) and then move the development version to live.

Don’t get your hopes up.... the initial load time problem still persists. I did a clean install and the home page loaded nicely. Then came back an hour later and it took 22 seconds. Right after that its down to 1.5 seconds again. But if you come back later it will be 20 seconds again. This is a problem many users have complained about but it does not get addressed. I guess I’ll wait for 1.3 and see if anything changed…

Congratulations guys, great job, you guys are moving in right direction and webservices API is great way to grow community. One suggestion is to improve import/export module, which i see listed in your road map. I think it should be listed higher in your things to do, since migration can be a pain and you can certainly attract more people just by resolving it.

I had the same problem with the upgrade not available, so I used this extension key “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest” In the Magento Connect manager, after setting the environment to ‘Stable’, then click on install. It seamed to work, but now I get a error stating the invalid php version when trying access the frontend or the backend. I am using php 5.2, so I am at loss for the moment. I was using beta 1.1.
Any ideas!!!!!

Hey RobOrr
Not all is lost, mine is working fine now after the web host did something to the server. It may have been a simple reboot or an adjustment to their settings. I email their support, went and grabbed a beer (ok, it was more like three) and it is was up and running. I will try to find out what they did and post it. FYI- Big time improvement with speed including import/export via the dataflow. It take seconds instead of minutes.

Congratz to Varien Team!
I had no problems upgrading. Just an issue with the permissions of my hosting server solved using SSH (find ./ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; && find ./ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;) executed on my magento’s main directory.
Again, thank you guys for the great effort.
50VisualFrames from New York, NY|posted July 26 2008
The problem is that while these permissions are ok, sometimes when it comes to installing something through Magento Connect, it won’t work unless you set the folder permissions to 777 instead of 755. Just a point to keep in mind.

The fixed is to recreate htaccess file, the upgrade overwrites your htaccess file.

RobOrr and other Media Temple users,
I had the same issue (incorrect PHP version) after I installed the update. For some reason, my PHP settings were changed to version 4.0.
You’ll need to go into your admin panel and change your PHP settings to 5.0.
Also, as mentioned the extension key needs to be set to “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest”. It would be helpful if the instructions could be updated to reflect this..
Other than that, everything works fine.
Thank you Magento Team for this great update!

The UPGRADE was flawlesS*** The intial load time for enduser load time is still about the same as 1.0 but the delay time in admin has dramatically improved. Furthermore, I saw a whole host of Payment Processors being listed - seriously, where in the world is 2CHECKOUT??? Cmon, its one of the very widely used payment processors and works perfectly for users who are not into merchant accounts. Is this something in the works? I have yet to find a solution - had hopes that 1.1 will come included with it , but alas! Please, anyone can give good news regarding 2CHECKOUT integration

@DanOh - thanks for the tip, but that didn’t work as my php version is already set to 5, and Media Temple “support” wasn’t very helpful. I don’t know where to get the htaccess file as I don’t have a local installation - what is the path? Should I just overwrite the updated file with the old one? Not real sure what to do on this.
67cooldar |posted July 29 2008
Thanks for all the hard work. I’d just like to suggest that you guys focus more on fixing existing bugs than on adding new features (other than RMA and virtual gift certificate).
68DanOh |posted July 29 2008
Hi RobOrr,
You might want to double check the PHP settings. Mine was set to PHP 5 too prior to installing the update. The rewrite of .htaccess switched it back to PHP 4.
The .htaccess file is located in the root of your Magento directory. You may need to set a preference in your FTP program so that you can see “dot” files.. You may also need to remove the “dot” to FTP the file to your local hard drive for editing or you can edit remotely using the Media Temple file manager or another remote editor or FTP program.
Somewhere in your htaccess file (probably at the end) you’ll need to add the following text. AddHandler php5-script .php
This will enable PHP 5..
Let me know if you still have problems with it..

Well, it looks like some core functions have been changed in this upgrade.
e.g.,
$this->helper(’catalog/product’)->getPriceHtml($_product, true) doesn’t work anymore - it has been replaced with $this->getPriceHtml($_product, true)
It was my assumption that we could override certain core files by putting them in the magento/app/code/local/Mage folder. But what’s the use of allowing us to customize things when there’s no backwards compatibility provided in new upgrades.
This is a terrible oversight.
71xac from Paris, France|posted July 30 2008
Hello,
I’m waiting this upgrade for new tax features. I tested by 2 ways : copy files and pear package. I got some problems with all methods.
Copy files : override all files with new file, and on front-office or back-office, I got 404 redirection.
Package update, an error “Call to undefined method Mage::setisdevelopermode() in /home/dev/index.php on line 41”
I found some threads in forum ... but for the moment, no solution.
Any way, thanks guys for all that work
72RobOrr |posted July 31 2008

Thank you for the new version. I have upgraded to 1.1.1.
May I suggest the Magento Team to provide us with a list of file names that have been changed since the last upgrade/update? We can then keep track of our own modification.
This will certainly help when we do upgrade.
Thank you.
76mr_magento |posted August 10 2008
Better yet, how about the Magento Team publish a list of functions that have changed or are downright unsupported in this new version. Great product, but the the secrecy around this thing is mind-boggling. Can’t just upgrade a product without any notion of backwards compatibility. It’s an insane way to develop a platform.
