Magento - 100 Days Later

![]() |
Hard to believe, but December 9th will mark 100 days since the release of the Magento preview version and community site. And as the numbers indicate, Magento could not have come a day sooner. The Magento preview version, which first piqued the interest of developers, designers and store owners when it was announced in April 2007, was an instant hit. An active community, now 4,600+ members-strong, formed around Magento with a blistering pace. Eager to learn Magento, they installed the preview release, read the blogs, searched the knowledge base, viewed the screencasts and engaged each other and the Magento team in the forums. And while the world gets acquainted with Magento, Varien continues to build upon its vision and improve upon the pains of current open source eCommerce experiences. From last month's preview release of Magento DataFlow, which will simplify the process for data importing and exporting, to the architecture behind Interface Extensions, which will make design updates a breeze, Magento has been developed from the ground up to be your next eCommerce platform. Within the next 100 days:
We are incredibly excited about the upcoming releases of Magento and expect 2008 to be a great year for eCommerce. Varien is committed to Magento for the long term, both in the US and abroad, and we will be going on a European and US tour next year to meet with Magento store owners, developers, designers and partners. The community feedback has been great, and community support will play a large role in helping us produce the best open source eCommerce product on the market, so keep spreading the word about Magento to your friends, colleagues, partners, clients and anyone else interested in Open Source eCommerce Evolved. |

Cool. Will you come to Australia?

Hopefully we can make it to Australia in 2008 as well

Nice! Would be really nice if you guys come to South America as well.
Open source always play a important role in developing countries and their economies more than they do in developed ones.

Is Magento always going to require Apache, or what would it take to not run in the Apache environment, such as iis without Apache?
It would be interesting to poll the users to see what server platform and the like they plan to develop and run the application, but then maybe Varien’s got a pretty good idea already who their open source client base is?

@tzCart - We feel pretty good about our base supporting Apache at this time.

Go Go Magento!
Roy, you have no idea how much you guys keep me inspired.
I actually put down my halo 3 handset, and picked up my ruby and php books to dig in again.
Your right.. it couldn’t have come at a better time. Look forward to getting involved more after this psychotic xmas season.
Happy Holidays to the whole Magento Team!

@tzCart - We’ve been testing Magento with several servers suporting FastCGI (like IIS -> http://www.iis.net/default.aspx?tabid=1000051 or lighttpd). As far as we can say: Looks good.

If when you visit Europe you want to come to sunny Spain (Madrid) I’ll be happy to help you. Hopefully my shop will be running in Magento by then!

I second Jorge, but you have to come to Denmark and visit wonderful Bornholm http://www.bornholm.info/?langId=2 , and if you are into diving we can arrange this as well
My family runs the dive-center.

@dietz - thanks for the tip, I don’t administer the iis, keeping my hope there’s a solution.
I think it would require hiring a php administrator really, or outsourcing the hosting, that’s the ticket as far as I’m concerned.

I highly recommend making Portland, Oregon one of your stops. As silicon valley living and labor costs become prohibitive, more talented individuals and agencies are migrating to the northwest. There are many local, relevant online resources for advertising your event as well. Of course, Seattle is an obvious tour stop, however, it is a 3hr drive from Portland.
