Hey,
I’m currently testing this new version and I was hoping the new Product Image tool (previewed here : http://www.magentocommerce.com/blog/comments/preview-product-image-management-tool) would be included when I’ve read this : “Product images multiple upload and management tool”
But when I go to the Product Image (either with Firefox or IE), I still get the previous interface. When should we excpect this new interface which allows multiple upload at the same time ? I’m really interested to see how it works and how it has been achieved
Thanks in advance.
10TheRec from Lausanne, Switzerland|posted March 8 2008
Oh… I’ve checked the SVN version and it’s there… nevermind then
11dan_w |posted March 8 2008
Love the new release! Lots of great updates in function, layout and usability. Plus, addons we were playing and developing in previous releases, still seem to function properly in the latest. Also, glad to see alot of the multiple website, category, product edit bugs seem to have been fixed. Also, I’m not sure if its just our server setup today with a diminished load, but it does seem to run smoother and a bit faster - even with cache off.
12magentoni |posted March 8 2008
go go Magento!! I had a moment of ‘This is just unbelievable - these guys are really doing their research and really listening to the community - and coming up with some truly solid solid features’ just now...thank you so much for this and congratulations on your amazing accomplishments- I hope you guys will start generating some returns on this on your end - you’ve given so much
I do want to mention one thing that really bugs me though with the new release- The configuration collapsing mechanism- Wouldn’t it make more sense to have it just completely open or to just save the settings? I think most people have settings they always return to. I think having the settings all closed creates unecessary work for the admin user. Just throwing it out there - if I have this concern, perhaps many others would also.
THANK YOU MAGENTO!!!!!!

Ok, I have to retract one of my previous statements. While the catalog and backend was pretty speedy out of the gate, once we started pushing the information into it, the new release has literally stopped. We’re testing it with 5000 products, all of which were successfully imported and assigned to the proper categories using a dataflow import without any memory exhausted errors. In fact this was quite a bit faster than previous versions. The products show up fine in the correct categories in the backend, but cause any catalog/product related task to seize. We have the server mem limit at 128, with nothing else consuming resources. The timeout has been maxed out, and the simplest tasks literally hang. I have just timed the length of time it took to update a category name once the products were added and it was over 7 minutes! Likewise, refreshing catalog rewrites under cache management nearly maxed out at 10 minutes to complete. Yikes. Any thoughts on whats happening here?
14anas |posted March 8 2008
In tar.bz(magento-0.8.17240.tar.gz) archive you put old version of Magento. After installation, in admin area footer says, that we use Magento ver. 0.8.16100. Zip file is ok, btw. great job and many new usability features in admin area - keep it up
15Michael |posted March 8 2008
@anas: all the downloadable archives (.tar.bz2, .tar.gz and .zip) contain Magento version 0.8.17240. Are you sure that you really downloaded and installed a new version ? To make sure please open file app/Mage.php, and check line 77 in it.
16Michael |posted March 8 2008
@magentoni: Configuration accordions state will be remembered in session in next release - see the Release Notes at http://www.magentocommerce.com/download/release_notes
17anas |posted March 8 2008
@Michael: Me and programmers work on it - we chcek sources, and version is correct in both archives, but when we upload it on server, and go to the installer via browser we have same info in footer (about older version) 0.8.16100.
We check vhost configuration, by making bug in index.php file - and all is ok (in webserver configuration). Now we try to dowlonad sources from:
http://svn.magentocommerce.com/source/branches/beta-0.8
Also check this topic: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/4172/ - I think this can be related to the same problem.
UPDATE: we have know SVN source, when we go to install url, now we have correct version (in footer apper 0.8.17240 - now we install it. I will give feedback in few minutes.
18iguru from Děčín, Czech Republic|posted March 8 2008
It’s great!!! It’s super! I don’t have a word…
19anas |posted March 8 2008
We find bug:
Ok it looks like this: When you starts installation, you have newest sources, after few steps in web browser installer you have:
Download Updates step.
When you start updating - it download (downgrade) sources to the latest on pear channel. As some write in this topic: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/4172/ on pear we have now older version.
It is wire (maybe you should have to add some condiation when we do update - in this case downgrade - to lower version - updating can be associated with thinking about never version in most cases).
20Michael |posted March 8 2008
@anas: It’s not a bug, it was specifically mentioned that for this version we don’t have PEAR packages at the moment, they’ll follow in a few days. See the notice highlighted in bold on top of this page
21anas |posted March 8 2008
@Michael: yes, you are right - maybe it’s not a bug as most we think about it - but functioanlity don’t works as we expect. After choosing SVN - as the source of update, all goes clear and we have now installed fresh new version of Magento.
Also there was an info, so the problem as in most cases was on human side
. Thanks for you feedback.
22mayerwin from France|posted March 8 2008
Michael, is it normal that “store views” have disappeared in the Static Blocks management, and we also can no longer choose which store view applies with CMS pages?
23mayerwin from France|posted March 8 2008
My bad, on my installation I can’t do what I mentionned, but on your demo backend it works fine. I have to find out what happened.
24anas |posted March 8 2008
@Michael - one of the greates features in this version is inline translation - is there any possibility to export translated data - and import(use) it on other installation?
25Michael |posted March 8 2008
@mayerwin: I guess you have only one store view in the system. In that case Magento admin tries to simplify most of the forms, grids, etc - as there’s no need to specify or to display store view (as it is the only one in the system) in most cases. Right after you add another store view, all the ‘missing’ fields and columns will be available again.
26mayerwin from France|posted March 8 2008
You’re entirely right Michael, thank you a lot! So it’s perfect now
. Congratulations for the good work.
27Baybee from North Carolina|posted March 9 2008
When entering a new product, there is no where in any part of the config to put a price. On the configurable products, whatever attribute set I’ve used, I can enter prices for those, but there is not anywhere to enter a price for simple products.
28srinigenie |posted March 9 2008
A mind boggling set of features!! Congratulations Magento team!!
I was trying to look for features/enhancements that have been added in the bulk import (or dataflow module) and found one line
“We have limitation on imported date in current implementation of dataflow. Using 128MB: for customers the maximum is 406 items, for products the maximum is 12927 items from our tests”.
So currently the number 12927- is it a limit for Magento?
And has import of categories been included in this release? Reading “@dan_w” comment, it seems to be included??
29dan_w |posted March 9 2008
@srinigenie: I should qualify or expand on our initial experience with the new release. It does not appear that category import has been implemented, but rather that assigning products to pre-existing categories is now possible based on the category_id, which we have successfully done without any problems. I should mention, though that we are experiencing an issue with product visibility on the frontend after import. The products import fine to the proper category and appear in the backend in the appropriate category, however are not immediately visible on the frontend. When we click edit for a product and then hit save, the product is now visible even though no changes were made. We are currently looking over our import feed to see if we can find a bug.
30srinigenie |posted March 9 2008
And do you see what I see (I mean what I dont see
)...I am not able to see the ‘Price’ sidenavigation when I create or edit a product. The price however gets displayed on the search results..
31bolasevich |posted March 9 2008
has the template structure changes at all?
32Discovery from Reading UK|posted March 9 2008
@srinigenie - well spotted!
Fortunately you can go into the attribute ‘price’ and enable it for the product types - configurable, simple and whatever the other one is, then go back to your product and the price tab shows up.
One problem I found was installing with the sample data and the currency set to something other than the default - this did not work for me and the British pound. I went back to my old install and somehow managed to unpack lots of files to fix that and get to the current preview edition.
The rest of the new features are excellent - the image upload, add new simple products to configurable and the dashboard are particular faves. I did not do too well on the excel export, but CSV works…

It would be great to know what parts of new version are not changed because if we worked with the older version we don’t know how to install to not change nothing wrong. For example, the skin folder remains the same? Can we mantain the old skin folder for the new version? Or we must do all modifications again?
34Ross from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK|posted March 9 2008
Others may want to note the slight change of syntax for showing Blocks (such as a product list) in a CMS page:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/4183/
This will be of help if you find your product listing on the front page has stopped working.
35aimos |posted March 9 2008
Firstly thanks for the new release. But I have a rant too. The sampledata kills my FRESH installation all the time. I do the installation process with db, admin user and so forth. After that I execute the sampledata into my db and boom big error. This hurts.
It also does not work the other way around. I executed first the sampledata and started then the installation. Again an error.
36Discovery from Reading UK|posted March 9 2008
@aimos - I felt the same, restored my earlier version then unzipped the new package over it, getting the permissions correct. It then worked without any other work needed, no sql to run or anything else.
No problems as of yet, and I did not have to lose out on anything entered, e.g. categories or attributes (this I was prepared to do but did not have to). I have added a few products since, and get the new dash board and image thing. It was slow the first time I gave it a try, but no ill effects as of yet, and the speed went back to normal after the first page load. Probably not recommended by the team, but if you have the last version somewhere, just unpack the new stuff over it, and that should keep you developing. Also note that you may need to turn prices back on by going into the attribute, same with SKU’s if you want them on your pages, and the same with tier prices.
Have fun and stick with the programme!
37asfaltagmail from Buenos Aires, Argentina|posted March 10 2008
I have a clean installation. Then I upload my sub skin directory (the one I was working on) and the sub template directory and an error ocurred:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method Mage_Checkout_Helper_Cart::getItemCount() in /home/cineclas/public_html/magento4/app/design/frontend/default/vinos/template/checkout/cart/sidebar.phtml on line 31
Can you explain this?
I have just answer if the structure and sintaxis of templates, layouts and skins remains the same that the earlier version, or we must remake the changes?
Thank you very much!
Andrea
38bolasevich |posted March 10 2008
Yes im with andrea “asfaltagmail” can we please get some clarification if the template/skin structure is compatiable with the previous release?
39Steve Yan |posted March 10 2008
It’s only been a few weeks since v0.816 came out so to see this release with all of its features, enhancements and bug fixes is awesome. Glad to see the ability to add attributes while editing products, mutliple product image upload feature, and the additional reports. Very nice work.
One suggestion I like to make, please provide more descriptive explanation of the changes in future releases. Sometimes, the short description is a bit too short. For example, “Improved attributes & attributes editing” or “Catalog models and collections has been rewritten” leaves me wondering. I think many more people would check out the new code, unit and system test it if the changes were better understood.

okay okay .. I have to say .. this is by far the coolest one yet ... way to go Magento ... Everyone excellent job with this one ... I finally had the chance to upgrade to the latest .. a bit sluggish .. but I did the manual update without much trouble ... my romanian translation will also need a bit of patching here and there .. but it looks cool ..

Congratulations! The product just keeps getting better and better. Scarily impressive.
Roy - you said one of the issues to be addressed in this release was performance. Was that addressed much in this release, or was the focus still on new feature development? Thanks.
42Baybee from North Carolina|posted March 10 2008
I have found that during modifying the configuration, when I “save”, sometimes I will get a blank white screen. I hit reload and it does the “repost data” box, and hit ok and it will finally tell me it saved the config. This I believe is a performance issue.... it happens about 2-3 times every 10 saves.

How to install the sample data? I intall it from the phpMyadmin. Then I install the Magento step by step. I then choose the svn database installation, and set the admin account.
All is set and everything look good, but when I tried to use the user name and password of the admin account to access the back end. The system will not let me get to the backend.
I think my installation procedure probably screw me up. Please help!!
