Video: Upgrading via PEAR
How easy is the Magento upgrade process? Check out the video below (please note that the Magento PEAR channel is still in development).
Sample Data
The sample data archive file is available in .zip (41 MB), .tar.gz (40 MB), and .tar.bz2 (37MB) formats to download (the files contain exactly the same content inside and are provided in different formats just for your convenience).
Each archive contains a SQL script that should be applied on a clean database with your database management tool (phpMyAdmin or whatever you use), and ‘media’ folder with sample product images that you should copy to your Magento media folder. You should then run the regular installation process as for a complete package. Please make sure that you have exactly the same version of Magento that the sample data is provided for – 0.8.16100.
Please also backup all your data and keep separately any custom changes on the files you did, because they may not be compatible with the sample data provided.

This is so sweet, I have been waiting all week hoping for a new release. Hopefully this release fixes one of the problems I was having with the paypal checkout.

You folks don’t let up! Well done on getting another release out.
It seems that my frequent visits to this website are well rewarded. There is always something new and interesting to find, and of course nothing is better than having a new release to check out.
3WebAddict from Chandler, AZ|posted February 14 2008
It took me to install tries to get it installed from the built-in PEAR Upgrader. Both times it told me that ALL UPGRADES ARE DONE, even though the page was still loading. The first time, please note my mistake here, was that I thought nothing happened, so I clicked out of that page, and when it came up, the upgrade had only half-way completed. So then with everything broken, I had to restore from my newly created backup, NOTE you really should back everything up before doing this upgrade. With everything restored, I ran the upgrade again and even though it said ALL UPGRADES ARE COMPLETE, this time I was being very patient, and waited till it filled the entire window with all of the the upgrade messages at once, and truly was done. Now I’m at 0.8.16100!
Please backup before you upgrade, and when yo uclick that upgrade button, be very very patient, let it do it’s thing.
Thanks again Varien!

I followed the instructions from the video. I then got some errors on the top of my page, now the page is white and nothing shows up.

I had a PEAR upgrade issue as well, so was glad that I did a backup. Although the cause of the issue was me not the new version!
My problem was due to the fact I had moved the installation, I put the details in a forum post here:

Now that march is in sight I’m wondering when to expect a release candidate so that we can start some custom hacking without the risk to have to redo it when the final version comes out…
Anyway you have a killer app, keep up the good work

The upgrade has been very easy. No issue.
Note: if you want to see new features (Sitemap management and new stores management interface), you’ll need to go to System > Permissions > Roles, and update Administrators role. Set ‘Resource Access’ to All.
Thank you so much guys !

Still no Downloadable Items/ Products
16Allison from Germany|posted February 14 2008
Very nice. A few more key features such as downloadable products and end user stores and I will be totally convinced that Magento is the new king in town.
17JOP |posted February 14 2008
Thanks guys. Good work! I was hoping for the downloadable products too. Hope I just need to wait a bit more. Is the 1.0 still scheduled for march?
18RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted February 14 2008
@peach - No light theme yet. Hopefully soon.
@falco - Release candidate will be coming soon.
@Pädy and @JOP - No downloadable products yet. We are very much hoping it makes it in (but can’t promise). That said, the roadmap will be revised and the items that don’t make it in will be released a short time after the production version is available. We are focusing currently on the core modules and optimization / performance.
March 31 is still a go

1. will you support vendors? Magento is the only system, which does not support vendors - they can be only as parameters. But they are more like categories (but only one vendor per product) - we need “category” page for vendors (showing all products of that vendors) with description of vendor, with address, with URL, with return conditions etc.
2. will be possible to fully redefine the URL schema (or is it, if so, i would love some help) - e.g. categories as subdomains etc.
3. is it possible to order professional support? There are about 10 things like those 2 above, which i need to solve and i can pay for them, for someone, who would make it for me as plugin.
20RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted February 14 2008
@cto - I can think of a few solutions that don’t support vendors. In any case, hopefully vendor support will show up as a community contribution in the near future.

@asfaltagmail, gpmenos - The best place to report issues is the forums. Our dev team typically does not go through blog comments

Magento!
You guys ROCK! I did the entire upgrade from my hotel room after work in about 10 minutes before I went to a retirement party from Dayton on my test server in Indy.
THAT is the way software is supposed to work. Also, your new Design doc in the Wiki is great. Well written and great examples.
Congratulations Magento! I can’t wait to go live with my store and your wonderful code.
Greg

Installed this release locally in less than 5 minutes, error free. Previous releases took well over an hour.
More than impressed by your attention to the installation process.
Great job guys!
26aimos |posted February 15 2008
if you made a copy of the default design folder to your own AND switched to that layout, you’ll get huge errors, because they moved an added some layout stuff.
27gpmenos |posted February 15 2008
Had some initial issues in upgrade relating to themes, but been working with latest version since yesterday, and it’s GREAT. Keep up the fantastic work.

Thanks for the new release.
I was wondering what happens to known issues of previous versions. If they are not re-listed in the known issues section is it then a fair assumption that they have been fixed?
29YoavKutner |posted February 18 2008
We list everything that is fixed, and do not re-list everything that is a known issue.
I hope this makes sense
Thanks

I have some problems with url rewrite in new version. It was all ok in 0.7.15480 and when i created a product it was automaticaly created rewrite, with “www.my-site.com/my-category/my-product.html” url.
Now (with 0.8.16100) I have to create redirects manualy. :-(
Did you changed something with that or it’s my problem (with configuration or etc.)?
P.S. Sorry for my english. :-( I hope you will understand me.

Hello!!
Anyone tried to dump data?
In the file there sqls as:
CREATE TABLE `core_website` (
`website_id` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
with:
INSERT INTO `core_website` VALUES (0,’default’,’Default’ ...
Another example:
CREATE TABLE `customer_group` (
`customer_group_id` smallint(3) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
with:
INSERT INTO `customer_group` VALUES (0,’NOT LOGGED IN’,1) ...
What is the right thing unsigned or 0?
Thanks!!

This release claims to have “Fixed bug with non existing attributes for configurable product”.
Yet, in the front-end options (but one) in the drop-down for an attribute is still not shown (except for sample data installation).
The bug has previously been reported here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/bug-tracking/issue/?issue=1251
I believe it’s the same bug. If not, what bug was fixed and when will the other bug be fixed?
33joanna |posted February 20 2008
Actually, all options defined for a configurable products do show on the front end, but it requires both attributes and simple products to be set up properly for each store. I believe there has been a lot of confusion on how to do that as this process doesn’t seem to be clear enough.
Frikki, do not hesitate to PM me and provide me some more details on what exactly doesn’t work or send me a link to your installation - I hope I’ll be able to help and clear out this issue.
Regards,
Joanna
