Interview: SBS Broadcasting

Magento is the best choice for any serious webshop. If you put all selection criteria next to each other, it will turn out that Magento is a fully-fledged eCommerce platform. Magento is a true platform for growth and we think that one of the most important USP's for Magento is the fact that it combines an open source license with a very committed company.

Falco van der Maden, Madia

Can you tell us a bit about your company?

Madia was founded two years ago as a full service internet specialist, and by now is 100% dedicated to eCommerce solutions based on Magento. Madia has already developed several Magento webshops for the Dutch market. In February 2009, Madia launched the webshops for the three TV channels of SBS Broadcasting. SBS Broadcasting is one of the two largest commercial TV networks in The Netherlands. Through these webshops, visitors can order products like DVD's of popular TV series, music and books. Madia is located in Eindhoven, The Netherlands and employs 6 people, each with their own knowledge area.

What technologies are currently implemented / integrated in the frontend and behind-the-scenes?

The frontend is in a fact a Magento basic installation with tailor made templates. The templates are based on the different house styles of the three already existing websites. For the backend, tailor made software has been written which seamlessly interfaces with Magento. This software a.o. aligns the order processing with fulfillment and creates turnover reports.

Why did you choose Magento for the project?

One of Magento's main strengths is the possibility to drive several frontends from one backend. This creates advantages in various areas like combined product management, application maintenance, reports, etc. All items that generated huge advantages within this project in terms of overview and efficiency.

Can you talk about the scaling and performance challenges associated with the project (and how you overcame them)?

One of the most important requirements of SBS Broadcasting was that in terms of look and feel, the webshops would seamlessly fit into the existing websites. Because of the flexible templating structure of Magento, we could meet this requirement perfectly. Magento offers a very advanced templating structure; with embedded templates a substantial freedom and at the same time control can be achieved.

Would you recommend enterprise companies use Magento?

We feel that currently Magento is the best choice for any serious webshop. If you put all selection criteria next to each other, it will turn out that Magento is a fully-fledged eCommerce platform. Magento is a true platform for growth and we think that one of the most important USP's for Magento is the fact that it combines an open source license with a very committed company.

What are your future plans with Magento and the site?

Madia will continue to specialize in the area of eCommerce and Magento. With regards to the SBS webshops, in the near future a further integration of fulfillment and CRM will be implemented. Furthermore eMarketing will be one of the target points. For this the standard available Google support of Magento will play a big role.

Any recommendations for people evaluating Magento?

Don't let yourself be put off by the relative young age of Magento. Magento is already now a grown up system that in the near future will become one of the biggest players in the area of eCommerce applications. Developers introduce on a daily basis new applications (Magento extensions) which extends the possibilities continuously. Remember that you choose a platform for several years ahead, Magento is ready for that.
