Calling all Beta Testers: Notes on the pending Beta1 preview release
With the pending release of Magento's Beta1 preview (by August 31), we'd like to reiterate a few important points that have been discussed on the blog (through postings and comments) in the last few weeks.
- This is Magento's preview version and an early release of the product. We expect bugs (and lots of 'em) given the complexity and intricacy of the system. As such, we strongly advise not to use in production environments at this time. Many things may change as we receive feedback (including the core), so please take this into consideration when making a decision.
- We've been contacted by hundreds of individuals from across the world that wish to take part in beta testing. This is your time to shine
... and we look forward to working together to address any issues that may come up. - Documentation is an area that will be greatly improved on in the weeks to come. If you feel you can contribute (as a developer or an end-user), get in touch with us - we'd love your help.
- The upcoming community site will provide a platform for us all to communicate. We are excited to start working with the community and getting feedback about the product. So don't be shy

- Support for international users is coming. We are currently focused on the architecture and core feature set. Once everything is stable, we'll be working with our friends from across the world to adapt Magento to the local flavors. This is an important part of our strategy and you can be assured we are coming your way.
That's it! Thanks again for the support and we can't wait to share Magento with you.

Roy,
As a end user & developer here I’d like to first tell you I think your doing a great job with communicating with us. Your enthusiasm for the project shows, and that encourages me to really look into putting time and energy in helping magento into “business shape”!
I do plan to beta test the platform myself, and I hope I can contribute to the community site with what I find.
As far as your comments about not using the platform in production, Thank you for your honesty. I can tell your concern. But judging from the great job you guys have done in marketing, I HIGHLY expect many people to still take the risk with using the beta in production. Most developers are highly stubborn.
SO… The brightside to this is this SHOULD further bug fixes and activity on the community site. I’ll be active in helping share the load.
Go Go Magento!
Happy August.
2Nick |posted August 26 2007
Also… Once Magento becomes available..
It’d be great to post the KNOWN bugs and issues. We all know its a Beta, so we expect some imperfections -=1 . It’s a great product regardless.
But I think a documented list of the bugs the Magento team has found could help further direct us developers attentions to know which areas to focus on fixing.
This could also help drill home your point about it being a PREVIEW version. A Bug Fix Roadmap so people can know a more detailed progress.
Just a thought. Keep up the work.

I have a dedicated server ready and waiting for me to install the Magento Beta so I can start playing with it, and reporting bugs.
Go Go Magento!
4Douglas Price |posted August 26 2007
Roy,
In making my decision whether or not to deploy in production, the main issue becomes speed of iteration. If we come across an earth shattering bug, will it probably be fixed in an incremental release in a week, a month? or will it be fixed in beta 2, 9 months or whatever from now?
We have no problem kicking the tires, so to speak, so long as we aren’t 200 miles from the next gas station.
Keep up the good work.
- Doug

Nick - We plan on having a list of known issues published and provide access to the bug list (although not initially but soon after launch). Thanks for kind words!
Doug - We will work fast initially to nail all the critical issues right away. You can expect weekly releases in the first few weeks until things settle down.

Good idea making this post as I’ve seen people ask the same questions over and over, even though they were answered in the comments. Now you can just refer them here
Highly looking forward to testing the first beta and providing feedback and submitting bugs.
Good question above about tracking bugs.

I am not the greatest php developer but I am a decent graphic artist.
I will be willing to help with any graphical needs you might need in the future.
Roy, I would like to personally thank you and the varien team for creating a new e-commerce solution.
Just imagine the kick in the pants the world economy will get when thousands of new internet sales websites spring up and allow the average Joe to present their wares in a clean and professional manner.
Go magento!
8Nick |posted August 26 2007
@John
Dedicated server here ready as well. -=1
I’m going to be building a new site starting this week, one version in Magento and one in ZenCart. Hopefully Magento will become more stable, and I can get rid of the ZenCart and use magento in production.
Zencart hardly seems production to me even now… but hey What’s the other option? OScommerce?

Having been using Trading Eye (both PHP and Cold Fusion versions) for the past few months it will be interesting to see how Magento compares.
Has there been mention on the templating engine being used in Magento? Sorry if this has been previously answered but I haven’t seen anything about it yet.
Anyone know what engine it uses, or is it custom?
