i think what most small developers want to know:

if one is not a partner of magento, will they be able to use magento trademark on their website?

with other words: can i say on my website that i will “install magento” for you and offer magento based developement?

@lopsta.com - Logo usage is restricted. However, you can make factual statements about your services in regards to Magento. I strongly suggest reading through our license FAQ at http://www.magentocommerce.com/license/ which provides examples of appropriate and inappropriate usage.

    thats good to hear.
as you will sell lots of different service, do you have any plan to start an affiliate program for non partners to participate in sales for magento?
something like commission junction and amazon does.

okay, lets say i’m a very small developer, maybe just started. i want to know where magentos success is going before signing up as an associate. (i know there are lots out there)
which statement is okay and which not?

“[company name] offers installation and service of the magento open source ecommerce solution”

“[company name] - the leading manufacturer of magento plugins”

“[company name] - cheap magento templates”

“[company name] - free templates for magento”

It is good to see the details of the partnership program, definitely something to consider.

I’m also looking forward to finding out more about the training and certification.

Will gold or platinum partners be authorized to use “magento” in their urls and/or domains?

We may joint the partner program but before this
    1. we must be assured, that we would be able to use magento for our customers, so that we will be the “owners” of the instalation, not the customer (we are selling long term projects, not one time instalation)
    2. we must be assured about the licence, as this http://www.magentocommerce.com/license/ is not something we can put on our money ("Magento software will be distributed under...” sentence is somenthing you can change anytime)
    3. we must be assured, that any contribution WE make for OUR customer will NOT have to be freely accesible to anyone, unless WE say it CAN be.
    4. we must have some support for our programmers (free and optionaly paid if it would be something harder) for our development, there are many things that magento does not support today (e.g. work with Vendors) and some that will probably be never supported because they are nation-specific (special payments, imports, exports ...)

@Scott - usage of the Magento trademark in domain names is restricted. Please refer to http://www.magentocommerce.com/license/ which provides examples of appropriate and inappropriate usage.

@cto - please forward your questions to partners (at) varien.com and our VP of Business Development will respond.

    @lopsta -

    > “[company name] offers installation and service of the magento open
    > source ecommerce solution”

Wonderful, but please capitalize Magento smile

    > “[company name] - the leading manufacturer of magento plugins”

Better to say “the leading manufacturer of plugins for the Magento open source ecommerce solution”

    > “[company name] - cheap magento templates”

Better to say “cheap templates for Magento software”

    > “[company name] - free templates for magento”

In formal written materials, a trademark should be used as an adjective rather than a noun. So it is always better to say “free templates for Magento software.”

I am very excited to see a partnership program for this great product.  It demonstrates commitment to the partners and to the community as a whole.  Thank you for having the vision and the follow through to do things the right way.

I would like to ask you, how often should I pay the fee - every year?

my second question is about domain: If I am a partnet, can I use domain like “www.hosting4magento.TLD”?

  13. RoyRubin

    13RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted February 26 2008

@arecuk - The partner fee is an annual payment. Usage of the Magento trademark is restricted in domain names. Please refer to http://www.magentocommerce.com/license/ which provides examples of appropriate and inappropriate usage.

I have a concern regarding support in the Partner programs.  Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that direct phone support is only available to Platinum partners.  If I am a Silver partner and I run across an urgent issue, what are my options for obtaining immediate assistance from Magento?

  15. RoyRubin

    15RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted February 26 2008

@Steve Yan - Your only option would be email in this case. Phone support is reserved at this time to our platinum partners.

Understood.  Hopefully, in the near future Magento can entertain the idea of opening up the direct support channel to more partners, even if it meant charging extra for phone support.  I would not mine.  I rather gain a happy customer than lose one.
