Announcing Magento Preview 0.6 and Launch of the Community Site

We are proud to announce Magento’s inaugural preview
version 0.6 is now available for Download.
With the beta release of the product, a new community site is now online ... and the long awaited demo store. A few of the community highlights include:
We’d love to get your feedback. Found a bug? Let us know. Have a great idea for a cool feature or improvements? We’d love to hear about it.
Download, Explore and Learn what Magento is all about.
A few important notes before we wrap up (and get some sleep):
- The current release is an early beta version of the product. We highly recommend not to use in production environments. Many things will change and improve as development continues and code refactoring takes place.
- If you are looking to setup Magento for trial, our friends at Nexcess Web Hosting are ready and willing to help.
- We’d like to thank Burton from Blue Collar Distro who contributed the wonderful apparel images for the demo store. Thanks Burton!

Take out edit links on checkout bars for sections you haven’t reached yet in the checkout process. They don’t work anyway. Don’t put them in until there is something to edit.
After getting to last step in checkout, I went back to store and added another item to the cart. I had to click continue through each checkout section to reach the end again (though each field was still filled). I think when I go back to checkout after having filled everything out it should put me at the last step, not have to click through 5 continues.
Looking good. Keep up the good work!

15Didier from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
Will you add a WysiWyg editor in the admin ?
16Scott from Northwest Ohio|posted August 31 2007
Burak, it is because of the fancy graphics included with the store items.
Didier, this may be in the works. I noticed a directory called Tiny MCE which is a WYSIWYG editor.
: )

Sweet news! Have been waiting for seems like forever for this day. BTW, the link in this post anchored with “We’d love to hear about it” doesn’t appear to be working.
Should be /contact-us/ I believe.

>This version is 58.7 MB. I reallt wonder why is this so big:)
Its because of silliness of zend framework. Its just to huge to be practical. I actually suggested Bil to release a light version that addresses the most basic parts and let other functionality be pluggable.. but no! they are too arrogant to listen.
I am not going to download 58M for an shopping cart ~
19Austin Biggs from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
I Can’t wait to test in on my own server i’ve aready got it uploaded.
20Zuh' from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
^ with that said, that I wouldn’t download 58M for a shopping cart, the truth is I did download coz I just couldn’t resist magento. Although, I hope that it trim down to around 15M some day. Anyway! kudos to Varian, its time for celebration. Cheers!
21TheRec from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
Well looking at it right now, really a great job. Usability looks great and everything is neat… Hope to be back for me deep inside testing
Thanks for this great work !
P.S. : The size of the download doesn’t matter really, it’s not just a shopping cart !
22howellnick |posted August 31 2007
Zuhair: “Its because of silliness of zend framework. Its just to huge to be practical.”
The Zend Framework is ~10MB (and 5MB of it is .xml language files) . Don’t be ridiculous. The reason this version is 58.7MB is because of the .svn directories and all of the high resolution images for the demo store (heard of SVN->Export?)
Get over yourself.
[/rant]
And besides, Zend Framework allows you to only use the components that you need. It is not like the whole library is loaded on every page request.
23howellnick |posted August 31 2007
So seeing that most people are thinking “WTF” when they see the +50MB download I went ahead and did a SVN->Export and made a new .zip and .tar.gz for those of you that want it. MUCH smaller now! Please give us versions like this Varien. Those of us that want to use SVN can check it out. Thanks
.zip file (6.4MB): http://outpostenterprises.com/magento/magento-0.6.zip
.tar.gz (3.8MB): http://outpostenterprises.com/magento/magento-0.6.tar.gz

This is a happy day. Thanks guys.
25Roy Andre |posted August 31 2007
Come on guys. 58MB is like.. 10 MP3-songs. This is going to be the BEST ecommerce webshop-system EVER, so stop complaining..
26Ludo from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
Absolutly agree with you FrenchToast...
“How to reduce the Magento 0.6 archive size...”
Compact all the folder /magento with winrar .
The archive include 12650 folders (60Mo) !
Deleted all .svn folders (11127 folders only used by Subversion). All subfolders and files are deleted (.prop-base, .props , ...).
And deleted 8 Thumbs.db files (only used by xp)
Now you have reduced to 1485 folders (11135 folders deleted ! The archive file size is “only” 48,5Mo !
It’s also possible to divide in 2 parts : magento.rar 6Mo and media.rar 42Mo.
It’s possible to replace mysql4-install-0.6.0.php + 5 upgrade files (3 Mo) with a single version mysql4-install-0.6.5.sql ?
27Floyd from Hobson|posted August 31 2007
Wow guys… I am just itching BAD to replace the sites I currently run (x-cart, litecommerce, yahoo and some hacky paypal carts) with this. It’s just simply beautiful… I have some poking around to do for sure. There are some requests I’ll have, but if I’m able to add functionality myself, this thing will just rock (well, it’ll rock anyways).
Thanks for all of your hard work.
28Steven Lee from Hobson|posted September 1 2007
Wow, this is no where near ready. You can’t even add an order from the control panel. How do you edit your site layout? Looks like all of the customer support is going to take you down, because as they say, you get what you pay for. This is free, and i’d NEVER use it on a live site.

Don’t Hate on Magento.
It just came out today, It is still in Beta
& right now all we’re doing is Beta testing
& to change the design you go to:
Catalog >> Configuration >> Design

For Magento Bugs why don’t you (varien) use something like ‘trac’?
Here’s a link: http://trac.edgewall.org/
31Zuhair Naqvi from Hobson|posted September 1 2007
>Steven Lee
Its not production ready yet and varien has made that clear with a disclaimer in the release notes.
Your comments about free software are out of your ignorance, Linux is free and it is the best software EVER produced.
You don’t deserve magento you should probably be given a half encrypted fully retarded system like most of the systems out there.

Congratulations on the launch, Roy - I’ve mentioned it on the Digital Web blog, and I’m looking forward to having a dig through the source code later!

Why Magento uses Zend Framework 1.0.0, when the latest version is 1.0.1?
38Katy from Hobson|posted September 1 2007
Awesome, congratulations! And a HUGE thank you. :o)
39Johan from Hobson|posted September 1 2007
I know this is a beta, but pr-wise it is not smart to make the download so big. It just does not make a good first impression.
By the way, I absolutely love Magento!
40Dávid from Hobson|posted September 1 2007
What do you think, when will it be production ready?
