eCommerce Is the New Road to the White House

With today’s Presidential Inauguration Magento is pleased to share that both the Obama and Romney campaigns tapped the Magento platform to engage with voters in new and innovative ways in the 2012 campaign season. Much like the 2008 campaign was a turning point for social media use in politics, 2012 was the coming of age of ecommerce in political fundraising. What started as a successful experiment in the Obama camp in 2008 is now a new standard for both Republicans and Democrats that can drive new channels of fundraising. We can expect the 2016 campaign season to take an even more targeted approach to encourage micro-donations (under $200) from voters during critical election milestones. While both Obama and Romney turned to Magento to support the astronomical scale of their ecommerce initiatives, each campaign used the platform to engage their voters in very different ways.

Obama targeted a younger demographic with the Runway to Win campaign which partnered with the fashion community to source limited edition items from top American designers including a geometric tote by Derek Lam and a floral scarf by Thakoon. First lady Michelle Obama helped drive critical awareness heading into the Democratic National Convention through her support of the Runway to Win designers.

Romney on the other hand worked with Magento partner Groove Commerce to hyper-target voters with an integrated social campaign with great results. A day after launching his presidential bid site on July 4th weekend, the Romney campaign kicked off a Facebook drive offering fans t-shirt from the campaign’s online store that was claimed by more than 13,000 people over a three day period. Integrating the Magento ecommerce initiative with social strategy helped push the boundaries of what was possible – Groove Commerce expected the offer to generate sales of more than 20,000 t-shirts alone.

As we look ahead to the next election cycle, it will be interesting to see how both Democratic and Republican campaigns might innovate on the Magento platform for future state, senate, and presidential campaigns.

Magento For A Cause: Healing Hoboken

The destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy has left many families, communities and businesses on the East Coast struggling to rebuild their homes and neighborhoods in the midst of the busy holiday season for families and businesses. As part of our ongoing commitment to our valued merchants, customers and partners, eBay Giving Works and PayPal have committed to financial donations. With so many impacted by Sandy, the Magento team also wanted to do our part to help with the rebuilding effort.

Magento territory sales manager Chris Simmons, a NJ native, wanted to help his fellow New Jersey Tech Meetup members around their healhoboken.org initiative by working with the Magento team to donate a Magento Enterprise Edition eCommerce platform license. With over 50% of Hoboken flooded by Hurricane Sandy impacting schools, homes and hospitals we couldn’t’ be more honored to lend a hand in supporting fundraising to rebuild Hoboken. In addition to the Magento effort, our integration partner Red Stage Networks has pledged to donate development efforts to help build out the site. Fall 2012 eCommerce Forums Roundup

As 2012 comes to a close, so do our Fall eCommerce Forums. Magento eCommerce Forums give retailers the opportunity to meet eCommerce experts from our ecosystem in their hometown. Attendees learned how our Solution, Industry, and Hosting Partners work together to implement successful Magento sites for retailers that result in increased sales and customer loyalty. These forums were also an opportunity to provide merchants with valuable eCommerce tips to take away and implement with their own businesses.

This fall we had the opportunity to meet retailers in 16 cities from Toronto to Miami, New York to Los Angeles, and lots of cities in between. As eCommerce continues to grow and evolve, we will continue to hold these events so that we can share eCommerce knowledge, best practices and successful Magento customer stories. As eCommerce continues to grow and evolve, we will continue to share insights, success stories and best practices with the Magento community through these forums.

The Survey Says: More Top Merchants Continue To Choose Magento

UK developer Tom Robertshaw recently released the latest edition of his quarterly eCommerce survey. The survey looks at all sites in the Alexa 1 Million that are doing eCommerce, then analyzes those sites to identify which platform is being used.

According to the study, once again, Magento topped the field.  In fact, the survey found that 23% of all eCommerce sites in the Alexa 1 Million were using Magento – a higher share than any other eCommerce platform. Magento has seen growth in every single edition since the survey began 2 years ago. Robertshaw continues to invest time in improving the survey’s methodology, providing an even clearer picture of which platforms are leading and which are lagging.
